Is Australia Its Own Country Or Part Of British Monarchy?

For this week's 'What Happened Wednesday,' we pose the question:  Is Australia its own country or is it part of the British monarchy?

Britain began colonizing Australia in 1788.  It may surprise many to know that, on this day, in 1999, the Australian electorate rejected a referendum that would have severed ties completely with Britain, replacing the Queen as head of state with a democratically elected President and Parliament.  The electorate decided to retain the Queen as head of state despite other measures, over the years, which have progressively weakened Britain's influence over Australia's governance.
